Hurricane Chuck Jaws Comparison

Hurricane Chuck Jaws

Hurricane Turning Tools

Hurricane Turning Tools offers chucks in two sizes – 4” (HTC100) and 5” (HTC125). We have an array of jaws to fit both the HTC100 and HTC125 Hurricane Chucks that will accommodate virtually any woodturning project. The jaws are NOT interchangeable between the HTC100 and HTC125 and it is not recommended to use Hurricane Jaws with chucks made by other brands.

Each variety of Hurricane Jaws can be secured to the chuck via Mounting Jaws with 8 screws. Every Chuck package comes with Standard Dovetail Jaws, screws and keys. In addition, we offer replacement screws if needed which can be found here. The dimensions for each of our Chuck Jaws can be found within their respective product descriptions and in the charts below. You can click on the tabs to compare the dimensions side by side.

Dovetail Jaws

Dovetail jaws are typically used for turning bowls and can be used in compression or expansion mode. In compression mode, they are used to grip down on a tenon. In expansion mode, they expand into a dovetail recess. They are the most popular jaws and should be in every turner's tool set. We offer three types of Dovetail Jaws for the HTC100 and four types for the HTC125. They include Large, Extra Large, Large with Deep Profile, and Standard Jaws.

Serrated Jaws

Some turners use serrated jaws instead of dovetail jaws in compression mode for gripping a tenon or for internal holding within a recess. They can be used for this, but they are not as strong as dovetail jaws. Serrated jaws are used for gripping end grain cylinders. They differ from dovetail jaws in that they are not tapered and have tiny gripping "serrations". Great for holding a candlestick, goblet, rolling pin, etc. We offer Large and Standard size jaws for both HTC100 and HTC125.

Cole Jaws

The tail center provides support for spindle work mainly - in the tailstock.
Cole Jaws are used for gripping the top of a bowl in compression or expansion mode, allowing you to finish the bottom of the bowl. They are designed for light finishing cuts on the foot of a bowl or platter. Heavy cuts are not recommended, as the buttons do not provide enough holding power to keep the piece securely in place. They must be used at slow speeds (500 RPM or slower), with the tailstock live center in place and never in reverse rotation. The convertible feature of our Jumbo Jaws allows you to use the 10” plates or expand it to 15” with the addition of the Expansion Plates.

Specialty Jaws

Our specialty jaw sets include Pen Turner Jaws which are an excellent choice for drilling pen blanks on the lathe. In expansion mode, they also have a second function of being able to expand into a dovetail recess while keeping your work away from the chuck face.

Pin and Spigot Jaws are used for holding small items like a box or lid; in compression mode, they can be used for holding small work. Pin Jaws have a straight side with a dovetail end and Spigot Jaws are smooth inside with serrated outside.

Step Jaws are used in expansion mode for internal holding within a straight wall. Normally, these are used for holding small items like a box or lid. In compression mode, they can hold very small items as they close down to almost zero.
